Winning the Game

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

Ann loved to play tennis. She was visiting her aunt, and spent much time on the tennis court practicing and playing. One day her aunt found her in her room struggling with pain that seemed most real. Ann was declaring aloud the truth that "man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. p. 475). but that he is the image and likeness of God, divine Love. She had attended the Christian Science Sunday School as far back as she could remember, and she knew how to turn to God when in need of help. She knew further that the presence of God makes the presence of pain impossible.

Outside Ann's window, some neighborhood children were playing tennis on the court. Ann's aunt saw at once that she and her little niece could learn a valuable lesson in Christian Science from the game of tennis.

"Let's talk about tennis, Ann," her aunt said; "it's a game we both enjoy. When our opponent serves a ball to us he tries to place it where we don't expect it, or to send it so swiftly and skillfully that we cannot return it. We have to learn to play all over the court, to move quickly, and never to allow ourselves to be taken off guard. Then we must try to send back the opponent's ball so dexterously that he cannot return it again.
