Safe All the Time

A Fighter pilot who had recently become interested in Christian Science through attending Science services in his group, was sent on a strafing mission over enemy territory. His plane was hit by flak, and it was necessary for him to bail out. In doing so his foot struck the tail section of the plane, causing intense pain. Immediately he began to apply the truth which he had learned in Christian Science, that since God is everywhere present there is no room for discord and pain. When he reached the ground, he was overjoyed to discover he could use his foot in running away from the parachute.

It was winter, and a heavy blanket of snow covered the ground, making his footprints stand out distinctly. Since he had come down near an enemy air base, he was apprehensive that his parachute would soon be discovered and that he would be tracked down. Again he sought to apply what he knew of Christian Science, knowing that as an idea of God he was safe in God's benevolent care. But before long he heard voices of men in pursuit. He began to run faster into the woods, backtracking to confuse his pursuers and using all the tricks he had learned about methods of escape. But his efforts were to no avail. Every time he stopped to listen the voices became more distinct.

Now fear began to come into his thought, his foot began to hurt, and finally, after running for almost an hour, he became so nauseated that he felt he had to give up. He finally stopped, turned, and waited for his pursuers. To his great surprise and joy he discovered that the men were not enemies, but partisans who were seeking to help him.
