My first introduction to Christian Science...
My first introduction to Christian Science, twenty-four years ago, was when I witnessed a child's healing of eczema. This healing made a great impression on me, but being a thoughtless girl I did not investigate it further. About ten years ago, I was told by an eminent physician that I had to go away for a rest cure. After I had been away for six months, without any treatments of any kind, Christian Science was again brought to my notice.
I procured a copy of the Bible of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and of the Christian Science Quarterly and commenced to read and study the Lesson-Sermons. I also read the other works of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. While reading Science and Health I came to those inspiring words on page 227, beginning, "God made man free." At the moment that I realized the truth contained in these statements, I was free. The following week I had a happy reunion with my family.
While calling for a friend to go to a testimony meeting one Wednesday night I fell and could not get up without assistance. My husband thought it wise to go home, but I asked to go on to church; we had not missed a service in six years. We went, and the first person to greet us was our young son's Sunday school teacher, who immediately noticed that all was not well. We sat down and declared the truth about God's child. When the first hymn was announced, I could not stand on my foot, so we continued to do our work. When the congregation stood for the second hymn, I was able to join them. During the service I felt the knee snap back into place, and by the time the meeting was over I was able to walk out of the church entirely free.
