The testimonies in the Christian Science...
The testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals have given me much help and inspiration, and I wish to express my gratitude for the healing and spiritual growth which have come through my study and application of Christian Science. I am grateful that I had no antagonism toward this Science or toward our beloved Leader to overcome.
From the age of ten I was alive to the fact that religion was something to be investigated, and I asked endless questions of my Sunday school teachers. They no doubt answered me to the best of their ability, but their answers gave me a baffled, unsatisfied feeling. When I was sixteen I spent a week end with a school chum, who that week had borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from the public library. During one hour I skimmed rapidly through the textbook reading a sentence or paragraph here and there. I was left with two distinct impressions: first, that Christian Science would answer all my questions; secondly, that it would take me just as far as my understanding could follow. The study of Christian Science has proved those first impressions to be correct.
Many healings have come to me through the study of Christian Science and through the loving, patient work of consecrated practitioners. Some healings have been instantaneous; some have been slow. The quick healings have come when I have been diligent in my study and when my understanding of Christian Science has been growing. One beautiful and instantaneous healing came at such a time. One morning I closed a heavy, double-casement window, catching the finger nails of my left hand between the sections. The intense pain crept rapidly up my arm to the shoulder, and I felt I was about to faint. However, I had begun to repeat "the scientific statement of being," as found on page 468 of our textbook, and as I ended the last sentence, "Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual," I heard clearly the statement, "There is no sensation in matter." At once the pain left my arm, and the faintness passed. I forgot the whole incident until that evening, when I saw someone closing a casement window. As I pondered the healing I realized with awe how swift and complete it had been.
