Tests

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

Loyalty to God is the school of tests. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 183) Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Divine Mind rightly demands man's entire obedience, affection, and strength. No reservation is made for any lesser loyalty." It is interesting to observe that this sublime reference to loyalty is the only one in our textbook.

Christ Jesus saw through evil, and thus his loyalty to God never broke. Evil never seemed good to him. Always he recognized its garment and girth. His love for God good, was vital. Our great Master knew the grief and the glory of tests. He took the simple test, and he took the test of tests.

The tear, the backward glance, are weights, not wings. Each day brings its tests and reveals their purpose. Tests are proving ground. Vanities and frailties expose the individual to danger. Varsity and pride are one. Pride loves a parade! And what it parades! Pride rides with wealth and walks with poverty. To talk of self is pride. Happiness is not found in self-importance but in self-possession. Down the causeway of progress stumbling blocks of fear, sin, and ignorance must be met and mastered in Christian Science To love evil is to suffer from it. Error feeds on fear. To be overwhelmed by a problem is to admit fear's mastery. Sometimes mortal mind rides the roller coaster, and sometimes it sits atop the pyramid. It delights in extremes. How important to recognize evil—its ways, its work, ah yes it unreality!
