The Practitioner

I would not seek to guide the way for others,
Except in deep humility I walk
The narrow way of truth and noble purpose
And with my heavenly Father daily talk.
Then I may say, "My brother, I will help you,
For I have been where you now walk alone,
And I have prayed and wept that I might offer
The prayer for you that would your sin atone.
My best endeavor I have set before you,
But only as the Christ has lit my way,
So pray in faith and know that love will lead you
Safe through temptation's lure from day to day.

In human leadings those who lead may stumble;
The mists of earth may blind their searching eyes,
So prove your way by him, the lowly Saviour,
Who mapped the way to peace and paradise.

The light is shining now for you, my brother,
Already it is morning in your skies,
What seems so real is but the transient dreaming
Of unreality—of mortal, changing lies.
And if your day seem dark and shadows deepen,
Then shut your door and kneel in silent prayer,
Lift up your heart in earnest, humble yearning,
And never doubt your God's protecting care.
