Introductions to Lectures
Hoboken, New Jersey (First Church).
Lecturer: Harry C. Browne; introduced by Miss Grace K. Sticht, who said:—
Many hundred years ago, Jesus promised, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth." Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 55), "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science."
The world today, war-torn and weary, is much in need of this Comforter. It needs to know God —to feel His love, His closeness, His healing presence.
I can bear grateful witness to the healing power of God as I have found it through the study of Christian Science. I have experienced many physical healings —including those of a broken bone, poisoning, influenza, and many other discordant conditions—entirely through the application of Christian Science treatment. In my contact with others, in business, in every phase of daily living, Christian Science has enabled me to know and to experience proofs of the healing ever-presence of God.
Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia (First Church).
Lecturer: George W. Martin; introduced by Mrs. Jeannie M. Webb, who said:—
It is just over fourteen years since I had the joy of hearing my first lecture on Christian Science, and I still remember one statement that has remained as a shining light with me ever since. The lecturer said. "There is no such thing as an incurable disease." I was able to realize a little of the truth of these words because, a short time before, I had been healed of a long-standing illness through reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
The great truths of Christian Science can comfort, heal, and uplift all mankind. They can help us, even in the midst of a world at war, to cast out fear, realize the ever-presence of divine Love, and know that the Lord God— good—reigneth.
Zanesville, Ohio (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Mrs. Margaret A. Smith, who said:—
Today the world is groping for spiritual enlightenment, and Christian Science is having a salutary effect. Fear, sin, and ignorance of God's true nature must eventually yield to the mighty power of spiritual thinking.
Christian Science, which is the Comforter, lovingly, patiently, here a little and there a little, is ministering to the world's needs, healing the sick and sinning, lifting the burdens of sorrow, fear, and lack, overcoming false material beliefs, pointing the way to harmony and peace among nations.
Those who discern the signs of the times are not discouraged as the world ferments from the leaven of Christianly scientific thinking; rather do they press forward, eagerly anticipating the glorious day when all sorrow shall be turned into joy through the healing ministrations of the Comforter which is to lead "into all truth."
Newton, Massachusetts (First Church).
Lecturer: Herbert W. Beck; introduced by Mrs. Mary Darling McKee, who said:—
I recently read a diary belonging to a little girl of long ago. It was a very small book and had space for only three or four lines for each day's record. One particular entry held my attention. For the morning, there was this brave resolution: "I am going to try to be good all day, to speak no cross words, and to have no unkind thoughts." For the evening, there was only the simple statement, "It is very hard to be good all day."
In these troublous times, many Christian people are finding it "hard to be good all day," for fear and doubt are continually trying to enter thought. But as Daniel found that the lions' den was a very safe place for him to be, just so Christian Science enables those who are afflicted with fear and doubt and deprivation to realize that, as the image and likeness of the Giver of all good, they have the daily manna which supplies their daily needs. They learn that they can experience harmony and peace of mind right where they are, and that it is possible "to be good all day," for they cannot be separated from good because God, the source of their being, is all good.
Beverly Hills, California (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Mrs. Madora Holt, who said:—
Jesus said, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on."
How to lay hold of spiritual verities has ever been the teaching of Christianity. How to secure food, shelter, and clothing has ever been the concern of the world. The healing of sickness is likewise much sought after. Jesus recognized human needs. He told us exactly how they are to be satisfied. He said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
Many years ago, a young woman, desiring to know something of the kingdom of God, turned to Christian Science and was healed of a physical difficulty while attending a Christian Science lecture. So great was her distress while waiting for the lecture to begin that she could only say to herself over and over again: "I must listen intently. I must try to get every word the speaker says." An important point is this: she gave herself without a single mental reservation to the message. And she was healed. The complaint has never returned. I can vouch for these joyous facts as related because it was my own experience. An authorized Christian Science lecture carries healing in its wings.
Wheeling, West Virginia (First Church).
Lecturer: Earl McCloud; introduced by Edward Stanton Campbell, who said:—
"Man's extremity is God's opportunity." This is becoming more apparent as we hear of the miraculous results of the power of prayer, and of the all-out faith and trust in God as demonstrated by some of our army and navy men in this war. They are proving that they can call upon God in their extremity, and that He not only saves them, but restores them to health and service.
In a time of national emergency we find it necessary to call upon a higher power—a higher intelligence than man's invention or man's device—to solve our many perplexing problems, and Christian Science offers to the world the opportunity to learn and to understand the healing and saving Principle.
