Religion in Work

The most hopeful thing to me today is the emphasis laid on religion by our great corporations, and by many of our broadcasters. These corporate appeals indicate we are awakening to the power of the sanctuary, as God's representative here on earth. Our big business men are beginning to realize that even business cannot be conducted unless people possess a certain amount of sanctity. Our government has said, time and time again, that our destiny lies in our spiritual powers, as well as in our genius to get things done. Evidently ingenuity is not enough—we must rediscover our sacred ties and bonds. God must be found, and found soon if our nation is to take its rightful place in the larger councils of international fellowship and leadership. Yes, where we fall down and fall short is in our personal religion. We are looking for God "one block away" from the spot where we lost Him. Many are trying to find this divine source with the aid of man's creations. They tarry under a street light to hunt that which was lost spiritually. And like bugs at eventide they go round and round the lamp. They confuse light and "enlightenment."

On the other hand, there are people who live close enough to the Master so as to be able to reach out and touch his robes. Making this contact daily they find themselves strengthened and steadied. . . . They are not sanctimonious, neither is their piety a display. When you run into such people you feel that the Christ is not far away. Life for them is not guided by the spectacular, nor by the superficial. They are Light followers, and this Light shines through al the channels in which they move. They are enlightened by the light of the everlasting gospel. They don't pretend to be saints—in fact, they are not interested in any form of pretense. They are just "home folks" who love their home—their church. They are God's handful, and man's hope for better things to come. We commemorate those who, in the past, have kept the faith. Let us commend those living for their yeomen service on behalf of God and His Church. In these days they are indispensable. Would to God we could include more in this group!
