Signs of the Times

The Master Christian

Herald Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

Today we are more than ever impressed with the meaning of the word "service." The call for service with its clarion tones resounds throughout the Christian world. If we have failed to appreciate the full meaning of service, it cannot but be impressed on the least thoughtful of us. Christ [Jesus] was not above declaring himself a "servant." In the word "servant" there lies the full meaning of "service." giving it a place of distinction. In these days of crisis and anxiety we are called on to be faithful servants.

Service carries with it renunciation. The life of Christ [Jesus] on earth, as exemplified by him, was a life of renunciation. There cannot be, particularly in these times, true service without renunciation—the renunciation of many things to which we have been accustomed, such as ease and comfort. We are today called upon to do the hard thing and not the easy thing. Service, that is real service, means doing the hard and not the easy thing. True service must be unselfish service.
