Because I have received many...
Because I have received many blessings through the study of Christian Science, covering a period of over thirty years, I feel that it is time for me to share my experiences with others and to express my deep gratitude for our Leader's wonderful gift to the world. Christian Science has been an ever-present help.
While I was in command of an infantry company during one of the final engagements of the Argonne offensive in the previous World War, I was hit by a shrapnel ball on the left side of my jaw. Although I was not knocked unconscious I could not open my mouth to speak. Almost at once the thought came to me that God's idea, spiritual man (and my only true selfhood was that man), could not be hurt or incapacitated. In an incredibly short time all fear left me and I suffered little pain.
After turning over my company to the second in command I climbed out of the rear of the trench where we had sought temporary refuge from the sudden shelling, and proceeded to the battalion post to make my report in writing, since I could not make myself understood. I was promptly evacuated to the base hospital in the rear. On the long and tedious walk from the front line back to the headquarters, my orderly and I were evidently spotted by some of the German gunners, since our route was mostly in the open meadows, because our advance in the early morning had taken us beyond the woods. While one does not relish being a target under such circumstances, I had a strong sense of protection, and the shells fell short of their objective. During the earlier engagement of intensive shelling, my company suffered very few casualties, and we stumbled unexpectedly into an abandoned trench. To the unenlightened thought it was considered "a lucky break." At the time it did seem fortuitous, but afterwards I realized that my thought of God's nearness had protected all the men.
