I was first introduced to Christian Science...
I was first introduced to Christian Science in May, 1934, and not long afterwards attended my first lecture. The logic of the latter so convinced me that I accepted the truth contained in the writings of Mrs. Eddy, and have relied ever since upon her healing message and its efficacy.
Prior to my attending the lecture, I had been healed in Christian Science of asthma, from which I had suffered for several years. At that time I was not conscious of the healing, but, as the facts are interesting, I relate them and hope that they will help others.
I was spending the evening with friends, and experienced one of the worst attacks of the condition. Although I did not at the time know it, one of the guests was a student of Christian Science of many years' standing. Later I went home, and, contrary to custom when suffering from one of the attacks, I was able to fall asleep, and slept the whole night through, lying down normally, instead of being propped up with pillows as on other occasions. From that day to this there has been no recurrence of the trouble.
Some days afterwards a Christian Scientist introduced me to the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and in the following June I attended the lecture on Christian Science referred to at the beginning of my testimony.
It was while pondering the truth given out in the lecture and contained in the textbook that I thought of asking my friend if she had helped me on the night of the party. The following reply was given to me: "I did not treat you, but tried to know clearly that that condition was no part of the real man—the man whom God has created, and of whom we read in the first chapter of Genesis. I knew that the real man was not bound by material laws and that I could not accept any of the world's erroneous suggestions regarding this belief."
Brought up in a family in which there have been doctors for four generations, and having been thoroughly impressed with the thought that the ailment was incurable and hereditary, I felt, and do feel, very grateful to Christian Science for the freedom which came to me through this healing.
Before concluding, I should like to express my gratitude and appreciation to our revered Leader for giving us Christian Science, and also for all the periodicals, which are such beacons of light in the midst of the present apparent darkness. I am also grateful for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church.—Philip Howard Spitta, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
I should like to corroborate my husband's testimony and to express my gratitude for the many blessings which an understanding of Christian Science has brought to me.
The religion was presented to my mother over thirty years ago when she was instantaneously healed of epilepsy in its last stages. Since that date Christian Science has been our only physician.
At that time I was constantly having a sty on one eye or the other, which necessitated the wearing of a shade, and the back of one of my hands was covered with warts. After my mother's healing she and I decided that Christian Science was also capable of curing my troubles; so I continued to read Science and Health, and one day realized that both difficulties had left me. Colds, sore throats, influenza, and measles have all given way before the truth contained in our Leader's words on page 228 of the textbook: "The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses." Protection from epidemics and accidents has also been experienced, for which I am exceedingly grateful.
I have also been healed of poisoned fingers, and, on one occasion, a badly poisoned right hand. I shall always be grateful for the help given to me by a practitioner for the latter. The pain in the arm and shoulder left almost immediately, but that in the hand took longer to overcome. I had great fear, and gave in to the suggestion that if the wound was lanced I should get quicker relief. The practitioner, realizing my fear, lovingly told me to make arrangements for this to be done if it would ease my mind, but the thought came to me, "You have seen so much healed through the knowledge of Truth, cannot you now trust God?" and I was enabled to refuse to accept the erroneous temptation. From that moment the pain ceased, and the condition healed rapidly. Later I was told that under materia medica my hand would have had to be amputated. That was over twenty years ago.
During these difficult days my husband and I are especially thankful for the definite surety of the promises in the Bible, and for the confidence in them which Science and Health gives to us. It would have been very difficult, without this knowledge, for either of us to be separated from our parents and homes in England if we could not always have with us the comforting truth contained in the twenty-third and ninety-first Psalms—to give only two examples. When reading the illuminating interpretation of the former Psalm on page 578 of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy speaks of "house" as "consciousness"—one knows that that "consciousness" can never be broken, shattered, or eclipsed.
I am very grateful for class instruction; for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church; for having had the privilege of membership in a Christian Science Organization at a university; and for all the activities of our movement, particularly for our daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor. I also wish to express my deep appreciation of those who prepare the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.—(Mrs.) Mabel Spitta, Sydney, Australia.
