The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Seattle, Washington (Sixth Church).

Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. Winifred Lovejoy, who said:—

We are gathered together tonight to learn a little more of the Science of Life—to ponder somewhat the Principle of being. Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Many of us here have been freed from various ills that beset us—freed by the knowledge of the truth which Jesus spoke. A lone New England woman, Mary Baker Eddy, when suffering from a mortal illness, called for her Bible, and, reading prayerfully the sacred pages, glimpsed the Principle of Jesus' healing work. She arose healed, and, like Jacob, did not let go of the angel bringing light, but wrestled until the day. With the dawning came the conviction that the revelation was for all mankind and that the pathway might be long that led to the knowledge of Truth. We are told in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 174), "The footsteps of thought, rising above material standpoints, are slow, and portend a long night to the traveller; but the angels of His presence—the spiritual intuitions that tell us when 'the night is far spent, the day is at hand'—are our guardians in the gloom."
