Obedience Leads to Healing

Let no one doubt the present availability and the efficacy of Christian Science healing. The grateful testimony, carefully verified, of those who have been healed, often after the complete failure of material means, furnishes abundant proof of the reliability of Mind-healing. When properly and understandingly applied, Christian Science heals. Students of this Science are therefore eagerly reaching out for a better comprehension of the fundamentals necessary to ensure its practical use.

In answering the inquiry, "How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?" Mary Baker Eddy, its Discoverer and Founder, writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 495): "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love." And she concludes this paragraph with the statement on the next page, "You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself." Thus is obedience to God stressed as a prerequisite of progress, as well as a cardinal duty in Christian Science. Indeed, it is more than that. Obedience to Truth may be thought of as a mental state through which healing is received from divine Love.

Since it seems that human experience is bound up with the physical senses, it is not surprising that one may sometimes attempt halfway obedience to spiritual law; that he may undertake to continue acceptance of the testimony of material sense in so far as it appears conducive to ease in matter, but conversely may attempt its rejection whenever and wherever material sense becomes too burdensome.
