Signs of the Times

Topic: The Power of Prayer

[From the Courier, Carmel, New York]

Strange yeasting forces are disturbing the world order and bringing fear and insecurity to men's minds. And yet the church was made for such an hour. The history of Christianity suggests that its message and meaning have been most luminous when the hour was darkest. Of one thing we may be assured—there need be no "blackout" of religion, faith, and hope, if Christians will use all the spiritual resources at their command.

How can the church gird itself for this testing day? Primarily through prayer. ... Only the power of God can steady us in this hour of crisis, make love the victor over hate, and enable us to believe in and work for a new order grounded on love and justice. Prayer enables us to be linked with God. Through prayer, energies may be released for the restoration of men from lives of sin to their rightful sonship through Christ Jesus. Through prayer a fresh discovery may be made of the values and helpfulness of Christian fellowship. Through prayer, we as individuals may find an anchorage in God, which will hearten and embolden us in these trying times. Through prayer we may envisage the divine plan for a redeemed society as revealed in Jesus Christ.
