The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Cleveland, Ohio (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Elizabeth McArthur Thomson; introduced by Mrs. Winifred Lowe Minier, who said:—

The greatest physician the world has ever known, Christ Jesus, said to his followers, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, we find this correlative statement (p. 390): "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."

Although the human mind believes that there are many causes for discord and disease, there is primarily but one—ignorance of God and His laws. This fact was first proved in my own experience, many years ago, when I was suffering from heart disease, from which the attending physicians gave little hope for recovery. As a last resort, my mother turned to Christian Science for help; and as I listened to the words of Truth spoken by a Christian Science practitioner, I was able to gain some understanding of God and His spiritual creation. This destroyed fear, and dispelled to some extent my ignorance of Him, so that I was completely and permanently healed of the malady.

Deland, Florida (First Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Miss Mildred C. Bartling, who said:—

The call of Christ Jesus to his followers, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature," still reechoes through the ages. Are we always conscious of God's presence and power, and do we realize that God is our Life and intelligence? If so, we have outgrown the belief that spiritual healing was for Jesus' time only. God healed and directed His children before Jesus' time as well as after, the Bible tells us. However, Jesus was sent to show us the way. He is our living example. And through Christian Science we are able to understand how he performed his works of healing, and by following his example we are able to demonstrate Truth, which heals the sick and the sinning and relieves those burdened by lack and poverty. We avail ourselves of Truth through a better understanding of God.

London, England (Seventh Church).

Lecturer: Ralph B. Scholfield; introduced by Arthur Beamish, who said:—

In Proverbs we read, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." In II Kings there is the story of the prophet Elisha and his servant, shut up in the city of Dothan, which was compassed by the hosts of the king of Syria. When the servant saw this mighty army, his heart failed him, and, turning to his master, he cried, "Alas, my master! how shall we do?" He was overwhelmed by the evidence of the physical senses.

The prophet, relying on spiritual sense, was not a bit perturbed, but replied, "Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them." The reason for Elisha's quiet courage appeared when "the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."

Now this fiery host was not Elisha's special bodyguard; it was the spiritual evidence of the ever-presence and omnipotence of God, good. This heavenly army is silently marching behind each one of us, wherever we may be, ready to afford us the same measure of protection that Elisha received. To claim our protection we also have to open our eyes, and the claims of the physical senses must be denied. In that way only can we hope to get a glimpse of the heavenly vision.

Thanks entirely to Christian Science, I and those under me were protected during the last war. For eight months my platoon was engaged continually in and about the front line in France and Belgium without a single casualty.

When Mary Baker Eddy, by her purity and spirituality, healed herself of a supposedly fatal accident, and thereby discovered Christian Science, she then devoted the rest of her life to proving that her discovery would work in every case when faithfully applied.

The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, when studied with the Bible, contains all that is necessary for each one of us to claim and maintain complete protection, health, and peace.

Fremont, Nebraska (First Church).

Lecturer: George Channing; introduced by Mrs. Helen Irene Harms, who said:—

During the unrest of the world today mankind is continually reaching out for perfect peace, health, and happiness, but only in the degree that it learns to think rightly does it gain and hold them, for only by right thinking can suffering, strife, and unhappiness be permanently destroyed.

The Scriptures say, "I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness"—the likeness of God, good. It is the mission of Christian Science to bring about this awakening.

Isipingo Beach, Natal, Union of South Africa (Society).

Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Mrs. May A. M. Koch, who said:—

Jesus once said to his disciples, "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." How comforting is such a message in these times! It is not always easy to remain untroubled and unafraid, but if we turn earnestly to the study of Christian Science we shall find there the desired comfort. For myself I have found it unfailing. Christian Science has been to me the gateway to health and happiness. All of us desire to be happy, but real, enduring happiness can only be achieved if we, each in his humble way, give service; and so tonight we have come to hear how we may serve.
