Signs of the Times

Topic: The Way Out

["A Correspondent," in the Bedfordshire Times-Standard, Bedford, England]

It is a great help, in turning our minds from brooding on possible trials, to cultivate the habit of "collecting joys."

Often when out of doors, for instance, we see a lovely tree or a beautiful sky or still reflections in the river; we think, "How lovely!" and then forget all about it. It is possible, however, to pause for a moment and consciously let the picture make an impression on our minds: it then becomes a permanent possession and, like Wordsworth's picture of the daffodils, "in vacant or in pensive mood" will "flash upon the inward eye."
