Almost thirty years ago Christian Science was presented to me as a help for discouragement and lack. A dear friend, when I related my troubles and asked for advice, told me to go to the public library (there were no Reading Rooms or practitioners in that small town then) and get a book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it.

The first lines in the chapter on Prayer were so clear that I declared, "Why, this is the truth." I had had no religious training as a child, having lived in the country far from churches, but I was familiar with the Bible. When I went into town to attend school I wondered why there were so many different denominations of religion when all were seeking the same goal, namely, God and heaven. But when I began the study of Christian Science I found it to be the universal religion, which gives us the right understanding of God as Father-Mother, and of man as the child of God, infinite Spirit.

Although I found this blessed truth so many years ago, it was not easy for me to hold to it, for the cares and pleasures of this world tried to choke the word of Truth. A Christian Science Sentinel which I took from a distribution box, was a great help, although I had to hide it from relatives with whom I was living.
