Christian Science was brought into our home when I was...
Christian Science was brought into our home when I was a child by an uncle, who sent us the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I consider this, and the teaching which I received in the Christian Science Sunday School, to be the greatest blessings of my childhood and girlhood. The attendance of a doctor was unknown in our home; and after entering the Sunday school, because of the teaching received there, I was able many times to prove the everpresence, protection, and availability of God. The two following demonstrations were the direct results of teaching received in the Sunday school.
On one occasion, I was suffering from fainting spells following recovery from inflammatory rheumatism. On this particular day I was upstairs alone in the house. I saw a member of my family coming up the street, and started to run to meet her. As I reached the top of the stairs, I felt myself fainting. Relying unreservedly upon God, I started to think the truths contained in "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468), which I had been taught in the Sunday school. When I regained consciousness, I was already rising to my feet, and I was able to go downstairs without any sense of weakness. That was the last of that error. When I entered school in the autumn and was given a rigid physical examination, in accordance with the ruling made for those who wished to enter sports, my physical condition was passed as excellent. The same report was given in school medical examinations in the years which followed.
At another time, when I was attending a university, my knee was injured. I was in residence at the time, and those in charge called a doctor, who prescribed rest. I worked to know that I was not hurt, and in a few days was able to walk again. However, in the course of events, an X ray was taken. The doctor who looked at the X-ray pictures sent a sincere, sympathetically worded verdict that by the end of the year I should not be able to walk any more. He diagnosed the condition as arthritis, and said that it was unbelievable to him that anyone was able to be about with a knee in such a condition. When the message was given to me, I thought immediately of God and of His great goodness. I knew that I had active work to do, and I did not doubt that God was taking care of me and enabling me to do it. I knew that the X-ray pictures and the doctor's verdict had nothing to do with me, as a child of God, and could not in any way touch me. From that time the weakness and pain, which had been severe, lessened, and then disappeared. This was over eleven years ago, and through these years I have been very active, standing and moving about for hours every working day.
