Christian Science found me when I felt there was nothing...

Christian Science found me when I felt there was nothing left for which to live. My mother had passed on suffering from tuberculosis, and within three years the doctor informed me that my only hope of avoiding a throad operation would be for me to go to live in the Mendip hills for at least a year, staying in the open air all day. At the end of the time, although I had carried out all the instructions, I was not fit to return to my home.

Then followed an operation for an internal trouble, and after two months in hospital, I was again sent to the hills to recuperate; but after three years my recovery was not complete. Then one day, feeling utterly despondent at the prospect of a second operation, which the doctor freely admitted might not correct the trouble, I went to stay with some friends whom I knew to be Christian Scientists. While with them I expressed the wish that I might pass on, for I felt utterly weary of forlorn prospects before me.

Very lovingly they told me of Christian Science, and recommended that I read the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. With very little hope and less faith, I took the book to bed with me and read the first chapter, entitled "Prayer." Laying it aside, I went quietly to sleep and did not wake until morning. This was remarkable to me, for I had not taken the drug which had seemed to be my only hope of getting even a few hours' sleep.
