I am so grateful for God, who, as taught in Christian Science, is a God at hand and not afar off.
About two years ago I had a beautiful proof of this. When we were apparently trapped in a camp fire in northern Michigan, my daughter, her clothing on fire, confronted me. I called to God aloud, and almost immediately she rolled in the dew and the fire was extinguished at once. Only then did I discover that I was having a similar experience, but in a more severe form, as my clothing was dropping from the lower part of my limbs and the flesh from one of my legs. In a few moments another student of Christian Science and my daughter were talking to me, wanting to send for help, but I assured them that all was well as I clung to the verse in Isaiah, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
In less than an hour I was free from any sensation of burn, and directed other members of my party where and what to do with the things at camp. I returned home, a distance of one hundred and seventy miles, the same day, using my telephone with the three free fingers available on my left hand, answering calls and helping others. In two weeks my hands and face were healed of all trace of burn. The leg took a little longer in returning to normal, after being so out of shape, for it was as through I had had neither bones nor muscles. In less than a year I walked without any material aid, receiving help only in Christian Science.
