When I was a child I was left after an illness with what was called hip disease, and this developed into tuberculosis of the hip bone. For eight years I was treated by physicians, and everything known to them was attempted for my relief. Some of the time I was kept in bed, and when I got about, it was with the aid of crutches and splints. I did not grow normally and was not well in general. I remember with gratitude the kindness of the physicians who attended me in those days. One in particular, who treated me longest, sometimes wept over his inability to help me when I suffered extremely.

When I was at the age of twelve, my mother insisted on knowing just what chance there was for my recovery. A consultation was held, and the verdict given that only an operation offered any further help. By removing the diseased bone there was a possibility of relief, but nothing could be assured. At best there was grave danger of a general tubercular decline. Unwilling to see me go through an ordeal, the results of which were so uncertain, my mother took me to a Christian Science practitioner. At that time we knew almost nothing of this Science, but we did know that an old and dear family friend in the East had been healed of cancer by its ministrations.

When I went to visit the practitioner I was in pain, and when I left her an hour later the pain was gone. That was not the last of my suffering, but it was the beginning of its destruction. I soon discarded crutches, began to grow and to feel strong. Finally I had no more pain. Instead of going into a decline I put on flesh, and have been considered unusually healthy ever since my healing. While the diseased limb has not entirely recovered its normal length, it is now only slightly shorter than the other and gives me no inconvenience.
