"Lift up your heads, O ye gates"

WHO has not felt aroused to a higher hope by these ringing words of the Psalmist: "Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in"? How beautifully they symbolize the entrance of Truth into the receptive human consciousness, to heal, to govern, and to illumine experience! Of course, this entrance is only in the human sense of things, for divine Love is ever present. The human experience, however, may well be typified by the finding and opening of doors, as symbolized by the outer and inner gates of the temple, and signifying stages of growth which lead to greater realization of Truth and correspondingly surer victories over error.

How encouraging it is to be assured that mental doors can be opened! No matter how long they may have seemed to be closed or how intense appears the darkness of fear, disease, lack, sin, or self-condemnation, the doors can always be opened for the entrance of healing, redemption, and abundance of joy.

One of these gates is that of humility. The first of the Beatitudes given by Jesus the Christ was, "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven;" or, to quote a modern translation, "Blessed are those who feel their spiritual need." All human beings have a constant sense of material needs, but the important turning point in many an experience comes with the realization of spiritual need. When this realization comes, it is natural to investigate Christian Science, which is the revelation of the truth about God and man. As we begin such an investigation, we may need to lay aside pride, conservatism, or self-will, and open wide the door of humility. Let us be convinced that we can lose nothing by opening this door!
