I came to Christian Science at a time of much distress...
I came to Christian Science at a time of much distress and physical suffering. There had been four surgical operations in my experience, the last one of which promised a future of semi-invalidism. The following winter I became ill with mastoiditis. For three weeks I lay under the influence of opiates. I knew nothing of Christian Science save that its followers relied solely upon God, and I had never read any of its literature. However, I had an aunt living in the Middle West who had long been devoted to Christian Science. One day, in rational moment, I thought about her life experience and mine. She seemed to have peace, while I seemed to be thrown from one physical difficulty into another. I called a member of my family to my bedside and asked her to dispatch a message to this relative requesting help in Christian Science. This was on a Thursday. The following Tuesday the physician in charge of my case gave my husband a short notice to have me removed to a hospital for an operation, the outcome of which was in doubt. I asked my husband to give up the doctor, although I seemed to be suffering intensely. I have always been so grateful that my husband also was willing to rely on God's care, for the very next morning the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was delivered by post.
I began to read and became engrossed with the reading. There were longer and longer lapses between pain, and finally the secretions hardened and came out of the ear without any pain whatever. The swelling went entirely, and hearing became normal. Within two weeks I was caring for my home as usual. A public health nurse who knew of the condition and asked about the operation, when told I had been healed without one, said that my case was one in a thousand.
This healing led my entire family to take up the earnest study of Christian Science. It has met our every need. My husband was healed of stomach trouble of several years' standing. One little daughter had an instantaneous healing of whooping cough. The three children were healed of scarlet fever before it was necessary to notify the health authorities. One of my daughters had a nervous collapse and lost her speech and the use of her limbs. Within six weeks the whole condition was healed. Faults of character have been overcome. We have all learned how constructive right thinking really is.
