Over twenty years ago I was healed of a case of blood poisoning which had been declared fatal by physicians. Previous to this I had influenced my mother in turning to Christian Science for help, but had taken no interest in it myself. When she was called to my bedside she rebuked me for not calling a practitioner in my own extremity as I had insisted that she do for herself. She called a practitioner in a neighboring city, and I received a very quick healing. In this, my first personal contact with Christian Science treatment, I was also healed of a so-called incurable hernia.
Following this I received healings of colds, fevers, biliousness, sprains, and many of the minor ailments which at that time I considered common to all. I received one outstanding healing which completely reversed so-called material laws. Circumstances warranted the taking of an X-ray of my hand, which had been injured while about my work, and the resulting picture showed a broken cord, which the surgeons claimed could not be healed. In a few days, after treatment by a practitioner, the trouble was overcome, and my hand is as normal now as it was before the accident.
From the time I first became familiar with Christian Science, I read the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly intermittently, and attended church fairly regularly, not expressing my gratitude as I should. Gradually I came to know that there is no half-hearted way to follow in Christian Science, but that it must be all or nothing; however, I actually went through the experience of losing a salaried position, and getting down to rock bottom before I woke to this fact. During this experience I learned to differentiate between will-power and moral courage, with the result that all desire to use tobacco left me. At the same time I was able to demonstrate over the desire for intoxicating drink. I am deeply grateful for the loving guidance given me during this period.
