Although I had frequently read the words, "Ye shall...
Although I had frequently read the words, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," their meaning was understood only after I took up the study of Christian Science. For years I had suffered in numerous ways. Prayer had carried me through many a dark day, but various weaknesses continued. My sight was exceedingly poor; at times I was completely blind in one eye, and at intervals I was blind in both. Our youngest son, a child of seven years, was considered very delicate. Several doctors had stated that he could never live to manhood. An X-ray plate showed one lung to be useless; his heart, too, was in a very weak state when he had his third attack of pneumonia, and no hope was held out for his recovery. He did recover—slowly—but remained weak and always ran a temperature.
During this time a friend spoke to me about Christian Science. She gave me a copy of Science and Health and asked me to take it home and see what it could do for the child. I took the book, but did not seem to be in a hurry to read it. Two days later I settled down to read aloud to my husband. I had read only the first few lines (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God," when I distinctly saw that there was no need to wear my glasses. I removed them and read on for two hours and a half. When I had finished, my husband asked, "And your eyes?" I replied that I was not even conscious of them; and I have never in any way suffered from them since. That night I slept soundly for the first time in years, for insomnia had been one of my worst enemies. The next morning I got up feeling as if I had awakened from a very long and bad dream. I emptied some shelves of numerous bottles of medicines and buried the lot. I took our little son from a hospital on a Thursday, and sent him to the Christian Science Sunday School, and on Monday to his ordinary school, where he has been for over four years. There is now no trace of the various ills which made up his delicate condition and mine. This was a wonderful joy to me, after suffering from severe illnesses of many kinds, and being constantly under medical attention. My husband, our four children, and I have experienced many healings; and we were wonderfully protected from a very severe veldt fire.
I am thankful to God and to our Leader for the understanding she has given to humanity of His love and power. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch society.—(Mrs.) Francis Dorothy Lesueur, Salisbury, Rhodesia, Africa.
