My first experience with Christian Science came...
My first experience with Christian Science came through the kindness of a friend who was working in the same office with me. She saw my need of physical help and lovingly told me of the efficacy of Christian Science to heal. From time to time she gave me a periodical to read, and invited me to attend the church services. Due to my prejudice against what I thought Christian Science to be, it was about a yer before I accepted her invitation to attend the church services, although her unobtrusive and sincere manner in telling me of this Science always impressed me. I shall never forget that first service, which was on a Wednesday evening. Christian Science was in its infancy here in what was then but a small town. Services were held in a rather dingy hall; the congregation was small, but the sincerity of those who testified was so impressive that it demanded a heretofore unthought-of respect for Christian Science.
At this time I was suffering from what the doctors said were stomach trouble and liver disorder, the latter supposedly causing chronic constipation. One morning in July, 1910, while I was consulting with two doctors about my condition, it was suggested that an operation might be necessary. I decided that before submitting to that I would give Christian Science a trial, so I went from the office of the doctor to that of a practitioner. His positive statements about God and man, and his assurance that I had nothing to fear, convinced me and gave me confidence. I complied with is request to abandon all material remedies, and I destroyed all the medicines I had been taking. My fear of food was overcome, and I proceeded to eat normally and naturally and without any ill effects. Indeed, the next morning many of the most distressing symptoms had disappeared, and as though it had been spoken to me these words came to my thought: You are healed. This was more than twenty-two years ago, and the conditions have not returned. Since that time I have not desired any other method of healing, and in every physical difficulty have turned to Christian Science with the most satisfying results. After taking up the study of this Science many minor diseases were healed, among them catarrh, sick headaches, and colds. My susceptibility to the latter two had made them practically chronic.
These healings only begin to tell of the great flood of blessings that have been mine through the study and application of this beautiful truth. About three years after my first healing, while working on what seemed to be a severe financial and business problem, I was healed of all appetite for tobacco and intoxicants and of other undesirable habits, at the same time witnessing the solution of the problem. The moral regeneration at this time was a wonderfully uplifting experience, and made me more zealous and consecrated in my study and application of Christian Science.
