It is over eighteen years since I received an awakening in Christian Science which enabled me to heal myself of a severe case of pneumonia. Several years before this I had received a healing of organic trouble, which had been accomplished very easily. Shortly afterward my husband's work took us to a western mining camp far away from any Christian Science church or practitioner. In fact, I did not even meet another Christian Scientist for about seven years. Everything went along very nicely for a few years and then an epidemic of pneumonia struck the camp in which we lived. Our two small boys and I became victims to the disease. Neither my husband nor I knew enough about Christian Science at that time to telephone or wire a practitioner for help. So my husband called in a medical doctor, and later a second doctor was called.

I became very ill and was conscious that I was not expected to recover, but I was too weak to resist. One day our little boys were able to come to my bedside. They looked at me and the older one said, "Mother, I am afraid that you are going to die." His words awakened me and for the first time since I had become ill I thought of the Christian Science textbook. The thought of it gave me strength to say, "No, dear, I am not going to die but live." I immediately became conscious that I could be healed by reading this book, and I remembered the definition of "Christ" (p. 583), "The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error;" also the lines on page 407: "Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite. This spiritualization of thought lets in the light, and brings the divine Mind, Life not death, into your consciousness."

I refused to have any more medical treatment and clung to the above citations for three days. I was then able to hold my book and read and in a very short time I was fully recovered. From that time to this I have been an avowed student of Christian Science.
