It is twenty-seven years since Christian Science was first...
It is twenty-seven years since Christian Science was first mentioned to me by a relative, as a possible remedy for a severe nervous breakdown from which I was then suffering. I realize now that I was not then ready for Science, although my health began to improve slowly after the first few treatments given me by a practitioner. But it did not bring the immediate healing I expected, and so my interest was not really awakened until five years later, when my husband was remarkably healed of the drink and drug habits. I was greatly impressed at seeing him leave the house one evening in the depths of despair for an appointment with a friend who is a Christian Scientist, and in the course of an hour or two return home a new man, reborn as it were; and this healing has been permanent.
After that I began attending church, sending our children to Sunday school, and devoting some time to reading the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and other Christian Science literature; but it was four years more before I comprehended something of the wonderful healing and regenerating power of this truth as is experienced when one relies on it whole-heartedly. I was a victim of what seemed to be a most distressing and alarming heart trouble, and was overcome with great dread and anxiety. I wanted to pay a visit to my parents, who lived two hundred miles away, but was filled with fear at the thought of making the trip alone on the train. I started, however, my bag filled with Christian Science literature, which I read constantly; but I was so terrified that it seemed as if I should pass on before reaching my destination. At my parents' home the same protecting power that urged me to take the trip kept me from confiding to them how bad I was feeling, for they would have been greatly alarmed.
The next day I asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner; and a day later, as I was lying on a couch, trying earnestly to realize the truth of some of the statements I had read in Science and Health, my mother asked me to accompany her downtown. I was on the point of replying that I should be unable to do so, when suddenly, "in the twinkling of an eye," a great wave of peace swept over me and I knew that I was healed. I arose, dressed, went shopping, walked several blocks to a matinee, and all the time that beautiful, uplifted feeling of health and joy and strength remained with me, continuing for weeks afterward.
