The paragraph on page 174 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
The paragraph on page 174 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, beginning with the ninth line, gives a vivid picture of my mental journey from the darkness of materiality into the light of my spiritually unfolding sonship with God, good. In this period of thirteen years of study a state of bondage has changed into physical, mental, and moral freedom.
The safety resulting from right thinking as expressed in the ninety-first Psalm became to me a staff upon which to lean in my passage out of the wilderness of mortal mind. At the same time I learned to appreciate as helpful in this connection Section 6 of Article VIII of The Mother Church Manual. Another forward step unfolded from the effort to make a systematic daily study and application of the truth presented in the Bible Lessons and in our periodicals; in other words, to abide "in the secret place of the most High."
From class instruction I gained the conviction that in order to be about my Father's business I must not separate my daily business and social activities from my religion. At the very beginning of my study of this truth I had a twofold healing experience which indicates what even a limited knowledge properly applied will do. Our Leader says in Science and Health (p. 449), "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." One case was the instantaneous healing of a chronic condition of skin eruptions and boils, which had been to me a source of much discomfort for a number of years. The other healing was that of lack of employment. The "grain of Christian Science" in this case was the clear realization that, as Mind's idea, I was at that moment in a position to give the service God, Mind, had equipped me to render, and that the place for that service was ready and waiting for me. I had been out of work for a long period, without funds, and this declaration of the truth stayed with me while going downtown in search of employment; and within half an hour a satisfactory position was obtained.
