"Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love."

"Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love." This we read in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 57); and on page 304, "Sorrow is not the master of joy." It has been my experience to have to prove the truth of these statements. How grateful we should be to have the understanding, even though it be slight at first, of how to accept our birthright as the children of God!

My little niece, aged four, was present when I was suddenly taken quite ill. Unthinkingly, I audibly expressed how ill I felt, and very quickly she replied, "Well, why don't you just understand your understanding?" Here was food for thought—to analyze my thinking, and see just how much I understood and was putting into practice my lifelong teaching. Here, then, was an opportunity for me to prove that sudden fear was not real, that God's child is always perfect, that he possesses, by reflection, the qualities of God, and that "whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life" (ibid., p. 215). The illness completely vanished within half an hour.

I should also like to express gratitude for what I should call an instantaneous healing. For some weeks what seemed to be a dislocation of a finger joint, accompanied by swelling, inconvenienced me greatly in my office duties, until it seemed that I should soon be unable to use my hand; and then I realized I had not been instant in denying this when it first appeared. That night I asked my mother for help in Christian Science, and in the morning the hand was perfectly normal; and it has remained so.
