With joyful gratitude I want to add my testimony to those of many others, which bear witness to the regeneration brought about in their lives through the study and application of Christian Science. I did not take up its study for physical healing, but to find, if possible, a God whom I could understand, and to satisfy a hungry seeking. From my earliest recollection I would wake up each morning with a sense of fear and gloom, which at times completely enveloped me. I could not reconcile the thought of a God who would inflict disease and misery with the Father of us all, who is Love.
In my early twenties I was privileged to live in the home of a Christian Scientist in a small city where I taught school. I noticed that people opened to her as a rosebud opens to the sunlight, and I felt she had something I needed. At her suggestion I read her copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and while at first I thought it ridiculous, I soon found that it opened the Bible to me and offered a new hope. Truly I, "who came to scoff remained to pray."
Though I was far down in the valley of depression and the uphill road was stony, it was a constant strength to know that there was a promise of freedom from distress and unhappiness. Opportunity soon came to change work, and with it came the problem of being away from home for years at a time. The sense of separation was slowly, but surely, overcome. In 1922, when the unemployment situation seemed a very real one, I was suddenly dismissed by my employer with charges of disloyalty against me. Within two days, with the help of a loving practitioner, I was led to a much better position, with more harmonious surroundings in every way; and, as I held to the thought that man as God's reflection can neither condemn nor be condemned, the charges were quickly and completely lifted in a way that I could never have outlined.
