Christian Science was first introduced to me by a very kind friend about eighteen years ago, and I took up its study after I had seen the many benefits she was deriving through her understanding of it. One of the first things I realized in its teachings was that true health is reached through pure spiritual thinking; that is, through all the good thoughts which God gives us, and not, as most of us have been taught, by seeking a condition of healthy matter through material ways and means. As a result, I have been able to work in my business—and insurance office—for seventeen years without any of the minor ailments which tend to make work wearisome, and have been absent from my post only on one occasion, when I had an attack of measles, which was quickly met by the help of a practitioner. On account of its being registered as an infectious disease I had to remain at home; but I did not feel any symptoms of the disease, and was able to take that opportunity to do the spring cleaning in my home. At the end of a week I again showed myself to the doctor who had given the certificate of measles to my employers, and he then gave me a clean bill of health.
The second time disease attacked me was when I had a very swollen and painful leg as a result of varicose veins. Again the kindly help of a practitioner met the condition through Christian Science, and I was able to go to my work daily, and even to act as an usher at a Christian Science lecture without feeling inconvenienced.
For all these experiences I feel profoundly grateful, and also for the wonderful protection that Christian Science gives us against pain. It was necessary for me to have several decayed teeth removed, and I decided to rely solely on Christian Science, which for all these years had never failed me. I asked for help from a practitioner, who gave it lovingly. I also studied the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and these words from page 201 gave me great comfort before I went to the dentist: "The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." My consciousness then became calm, and I felt no more sensation when the teeth were removed than I should have done had they been bits of wood in my mouth.
