Pilgrimage

Dear God, let me walk with Thee all the day,
For when alone, how steep the path and drear,
What hills of doubt and valleys deep of fear!
But by Thy side, how easy grows the way!

One day, when dark and heavy seemed the road,
I felt the sweet protection of Thine arm
Tenderly around me, sheltering me from harm,
Bringing deliverance swift from evil's load.

I know Thy sheltering arm is ever near;
That if I stumble, or appear to fall,
I have not listened to Thy loving call,
But turned aside from Thy sweet presence here.

O Thou most lovely and beloved Friend,
In the sure haven of Thy love's great peace,
I feel all human strife and tumult cease,
For at Thy Word the powers of darkness end.
