With a heart filled with gratitude I wish to testify to...

With a heart filled with gratitude I wish to testify to the wonderful healing I have experienced in Christian Science.

Some years ago I was taken ill with severe stomach trouble which brought on a hemorrhage with each attack. I sought medical aid at once, and each time was taken to a hospital, where the doctors tried to heal me with ice bags and a starving cure, but I grew worse from year to year. I had already consulted eighteen doctors. The last time I was in a hospital was in January, 1926; but an operation could not be performed because I was too weak, so I asked to be discharged. I grew even worse and for six weeks lived on water, as I could not retain anything else. At last I made up my mind to go to my physician again and ask him to introduce me to a surgeon, for because of the severe pain and the secretiveness of all the doctors I knew very well I was suffering from cancer of the stomach.

The physician inquired at once when it would be possible for the surgeon to examine me, and within three days the verdict was passed. I was to go to the hospital at once, to the department of surgery, and later on to the university clinic. The doctor would not allow me to remain at home with my family another day, but said that the surgical professor was waiting for me. My wife was taking me to the hospital at three o'clock in the afternoon. On our way there we had to pass my aunt's house. Without any set purpose we went in and told her that I was on my way to the hospital to undergo an operation. I did not know that my aunt was an adherent of Christian Science, and I myself knew nothing about this teaching. She told me I could be helped if I still believed in God, and said she was willing to go with me to a Christian Science practitioner at once. However, I could not decide immediately, because I had been an earnest adherent of the Lutheran church for thirteen years; I had even conducted prayer meetings; and yet I had suffered so terribly and did not know what I had done to deserve this punishment. At last I said to myself that since I had tried eighteen doctors and they had not been able to help me, I might as well try Christian Science, as it could not harm me anyway. I sent my wife and our little boy home, my aunt got ready, and we went at once so that we should find the lady at home. How I got there I do not know, for I was suffering unbearable pain and could hardly stand or sit down. This dear practitioner received me most lovingly.
