Christian Science cannot properly be classed among...
Star-News
Christian Science cannot properly be classed among "healing fads and quackeries," as implied by a doctor in a recent lecture. Mary Baker Eddy says, "Christian Scientists ... are not quacks, ... but they are leaders of a reform in religion and in medicine, and they have no craft that is in danger" (Message to The Mother Church for 1901, p. 30).
As a child Mrs. Eddy was physically frail but spiritually strong, and her physical invalidism continued until she was about forty years of age. During these many years of suffering she tried various systems of material healing without permanent relief. The climax came in 1866 when she was seriously injured, and at that time her long search was rewarded by the discovery of the spiritually-mental healing method employed by Christ Jesus. Through this discovery, she was healed. As the discovery unfolded to her, she utilized her growing understanding of Jesus' method and cured promptly and permanently, by spiritual means alone, case after case of chronic and functional disease as well as of sin. Thereby she proved that the method she employed was the same as that practiced by Christ Jesus.
To those familiar only with material methods of healing, the spiritual teachings of Christian Science may at first seem difficult to comprehend, but such was the case also in the days of primitive Christianity when Paul said that "the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: ... because they are spiritually discerned." However, those who have adhered consistently to the logical reasoning of Mrs. Eddy as to the great fact of the perfection of God and His creation, have enjoyed the same relief from sickness, sin, and sorrow that came to mankind when Christ Jesus was on earth.
