While a member of a so-called orthodox church and living...

While a member of a so-called orthodox church and living in accord with its teachings, I was not satisfied, and was continually reaching out for something higher than this religion could give. Christian Science was presented to me, and after long and careful consideration I decided to try it. A very dear relative, who was a sincere student of this Science, visited me several times during this period of making a decision and talked freely of this truth. I soon had the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in my possession. The first words I read were (Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Reliance on materia medica for myself and my children was instantly destroyed.

Soon after I became a student of this Science our son was called to the service of our country. Through constant praying for the light, the thought of separation was healed by the "still small voice" speaking so audibly that I turned as if to see the speaker: He is not your son, but only lent to you, it said. And when later he enlisted for service in the world war, and was called upon to go, I could more fully realize this permanent healing. At one particular time while he was overseas I felt a call of distress and sought refuge in the ninety-first psalm. The verse, "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee," impressed me so that I began to realize its meaning more fully. Later I received a letter from our son stating that one night he was in great danger. I counted back the days and found it was at the time I had had the feeling of distress. I was so happy that he had been protected by this same truth. After returning from the service he wished to continue his college education, but felt it impossible just then because of lack of finances. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." The application of this statement enabled him to graduate from two of our best universities. It also aided my two daughtes in their college education.

I have had many physical healings, among them severe colds, burns, and a sprained ankle. A few years ago I was very ill with influenza, which left me almost helpless in my hands and feet. While in this condition I wondered if I ever would be well again; but with my study of the Lesson-Sermons, reading the literature, and the loving help of a practitioner this condition was beautifully overcome. Quite early in my study of Christian Science one of our daughtes was stricken with what I thought was earache. I worked one whole night, trying to realize more clearly the allness of God; and the following morning a gathering in her head broke. In a few days she returned to school, but later the teacher informed me that she could not hear in one ear. After receiving this message I studied the Lesson-Sermon, and through the reading and understanding of the words, "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost" (ibid., p. 486), she was permanently healed of this defect.
