Over thirty years ago my mother had a felon which developed into blood poisoning, her arm being swollen to her shoulder, discolored, and intensely painful. A Christian Science friend had hardly commenced treatment when the pain ceased and the swelling and discoloration began to disappear. In three treatments the finger was healed. This same practitioner healed my mother in one treatment of a chronic bowel trouble of years' standing. Being superstitious, my folks thought this to be witchery, although mother was told it was Christian Science treatment that had healed her. This friend gave us a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
As my parents did not read English and I was just a child, we soon forgot all about Christian Science; but the seed had been sown. Christian Science was brought to our attention again several years later. At this time my mother had many of the ills "that flesh is heir to," one being leakage of the heart. Physicians at home and on the coast advised taking her to Florida at once, and gave her but a short time to live. I was married by this time, and my folks decided to visit me before going South. A few days before their arrival I met a lady who mentioned Christian Science to me. On being asked if she thought it could help my mother in her condition she replied, "There is nothing impossible to God." When my mother came I asked her if she would try Christian Science again, and she gladly did so. In one absent treatment she was healed of almost all her ills, the heart trouble yielding instantaneously and never presenting itself again; and she is still in good health.
Even after these proofs of God's care I did not commence the study of Christian Science; but in a short time serious problems presented themselves to me. After I had undergone an operation and been under the care of a doctor for several weeks, we were told I would have to submit to another operation, but even then I would be an invalid for the rest of my life, the difficulty being internal trouble in a severe form. Unable to be about, suffering a great deal, and very much discouraged, I decided to try Christian Science for myself. I asked for Science and Health, removed the support I was wearing, and began to read. Just how far I read in the chapter on Prayer I do not remember; but I arose the next morning, healed. While reading that night, I realized that God is Love; and I can never express in words what this meant to me, since I had been taught to believe that God was both good and evil.
