Because I have received so much benefit from reading...

Because I have received so much benefit from reading the testimonies in the Journal and the Sentinel I offer my testimony in the hope that others may be helped by it. In 1916 I was discharged from one of the leading hospitals in New York city as incurable with splanchnoptosis, falling of the intestines. For months previous to entering the hospital I had been on a liquid diet, and after leaving the hospital the drinking of a glass of water or milk caused great pain and discomfort. While walking along the avenue one day I met my old Sunday school teacher from Scotland, and after talking with him for some time he told me about Christian Science.

Shortly after that I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and started to read it. From then on, improvement was noticeable; life to me took on a new aspect, and the sense of peace that came was beyond all belief. One night my wife and I went to see a practitioner, and in her patient, loving way she showed us the road from matter to Spirit. I forgot all about the intestinal trouble, and was eating any kind of food before I realized that I was healed.

A few years later I was employed as foreman in a large packing plant, and while directing the men to remove some cases I stepped on a rusty spike, which entered my shoe and went through my foot. A Government inspector who was with me at the time pulled out the nail, took off my shoe and sock, and bathed the wound. All this time I was repeating to myself the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). My wife and I tried as best we knew how to declare the truth, but to mortal sense I was in great agony, and my foot became terribly swollen. On Sunday afternoon we called a Christian Science practitioner, who came to the house and treated me. She told me to walk around the room, but not until I could see my real selfhood as God's perfect idea. I hesitated; then got up. The minute my foot touched the floor it was as if I had been elevated into space, and I was healed. I was so thankful for this healing that my wife and I started to attend the church regularly, went to all the lectures, and subscribed for the literature, which, eagerly read, was like food to us.
