A certain editor-physician was credited in the columns of your paper, quoting from the expressions used by the reporter, with successfully "flaying" and "panning" everything that differed from his own mode of healing. It is interesting to note the difference between the attitude of this speaker and that of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, who was the subject of much of his unfounded vilification. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 444, she says: "Students are advised by the author to be charitable and kind, not only towards differing forms of religion and medicine, but to those who hold these differing opinions." Throughout her writings she showed the same spirit of charity to all, and exemplified it in her life.

Humor at the expense of truth is at best a cheap appeal for applause; and without hesitancy I can say that in the references of this lecturer to Christian Science and Mrs. Eddy, in many instances he sacrificed the truth. The honest public is desirous of the truth. Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science in 1866, and since then, because of the unprecedented growth of this religion, her life and character have been the subject of much criticism and ridicule; but no one has successfully challenged the fact that she was always a pure, spiritually-minded woman.

As to the use in the newspaper report of the word "quack," Christ Jesus was considered a "quack" by the Pharisees of his day; and the thousands of cases of healing in Christian Science may have excited envy. The fair-minded layman, however, seeking relief from sickness and sin, will not criticize Mrs. Eddy or her religion, for making practical again on earth this same healing Principle. An honest seeker for the truth concerning the life of Mary Baker Eddy can find it in the book written by Sibyl Wilbur, entitled "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy;" and a seeker for the truth about Christian Science can find it in Mrs. Eddy's textbook above mentioned. Both books should be available at almost any public library.
