As a little child I loved the Bible stories which told of the healings done by Jesus and his followers. When I asked my Sunday school teacher why we could not be healed in the same way, she replied, "We are living in a different age, under a different dispensation." Later, I was told that medicine was put here for our use, and that Luke was a physician. These explanations failed to satisfy me, but for many years I found no better answers to my questions. I still clung to the promises, however, blindly believing that through seeking "first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," our needs would be supplied; but as I was ignorant of the true method, my mental state was indeed a hopeless tangle.
My first impression of Christian Science healing was not favorable, as it was spoken of as in direct opposition to the Bible, which, of course, is not true, as I later learned. A dear practitioner pointed the way to the study of the Lesson-Sermon, for which I have always been very grateful. After securing the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Christian Science Quarterly, I began earnestly seeking the way. The first ray of light came when reading the passage on page 566 of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy gives her wonderful description of the journey through the wilderness. I began to realize that if God is always the same He is just as near and able to help to-day as when He guided the children of Israel on their way. As I began to understand the truth about God and His creation, fear, worry, and their accompanying ills lessened. Like all who take a radical stand for Truth, I have had many difficulties to overcome, many testing times, but with the honest application of the teachings of Christian Science these have indeed been proofs of God's care.
I am deeply grateful for the understanding of prayer as taught in Christian Science, and that it is possible to "pray without ceasing." The correcting rod of divine Love has shown me the error of self-will. We have had many physical healings in our home for which I am grateful, but the growth in spiritual understanding is the greatest blessing, for without it we would not be able to overcome the ills of the flesh.
