When I attended a Wednesday evening meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist, for the first time, at the beginning of the year 1919, I did not think of physical healing, for I had never been seriously ill; but I was in that condition of which Jesus says, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." I had not given much thought to questions pertaining to religious matters in the first twenty-five years of my life; but in the years following, the search for things divine was all the more earnest, incited by the example of a profound Christian. In this search the creed of the church had no doubt strengthened my faith, but eventually there came a day when I clearly recognized that I must take a new course in order that faith might become vision. What the right course was I did not know, but I relied upon divine guidance.
A few days later my earnest desire was fulfilled when I asked a Christian Scientist, with whom I was acquainted, to explain to me the nature of spiritual healing. What great significance this question was to have on my life I did not then foresee. The explanation, so lovingly and joyfully given by her, and the literature she gave me met with great response; so much so that I knew immediately this would determine my future course. The affirmation of the absoluteness of Life, found in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as well as in her other writings, made a great impression upon me, and I could not understand how Christian Science could be spoken of as an erroneous teaching. I turned to God, not to men; and the very same night I received an answer so definite that no human tongue could have given it to me. After this I went along the way joyously and confidently.
I received my first proof of the healing power of Truth a few weeks later when, owing to nursing a member of the family, I was overtired and at the point of breaking down. I applied the little I knew of Christian Science, with the result that I was instantaneously and completely healed. After days of complete exhaustion I suddenly felt as if I had been born anew. I cannot describe my joy and gratitude. I knew now that Christian Science keeps its promises. I knew that along this way I should rise to more and more beautiful and freer prospects.
