Up to a few months before beginning the study of Christian Science,...
Up to a few months before beginning the study of Christian Science, I had been under the care of physicians for about two years. Several attacks in one winter of grippe and influenza, followed by catarrhal appendicitis, coupled with, or more probably the result of, much wrong thinking and acting, had left me in a deplorable physical and mental condition. The physician diagnosed the condition as inflammation of the nerves. Food would not digest, and he put me on a diet; my throat was sore almost continuously, and no medicine taken had any lasting effect. I was constantly depressed, and there were many times when the urge came toward self-destruction. The physician finally stated I would have to stop working and go away for a complete change and rest. I did this, but returned no better; and he then informed me that materia medica had done all it could for me, that I must learn to control my thinking, or the next step would be a sanitarium. He did not tell me, however, how to go about controlling my thinking. I, too, recognized that no medicine in the world could help me, and decided that I would take no more; neither would I see any physician, but would to the best of my ability stop thinking disturbing thoughts.
It was about six months later that I witnessed the healing of a friend in Christian Science. I myself had no treatment for the conditions I have described, but did ask for treatment for another difficulty; and in the course of my studies, as my thinking was corrected and I lived more in accord with God's ideas, I improved mentally and physically.
Just a week or two after my first reading of some authorized Christian Science literature, the question came up of my seeing a certain physician regarding my condition. I stated that I had decided not to see a physician, but that I intended taking up the study of Christian Science; and I was ridiculed. I was asked if I meant to say that Christian Science could heal defective eyesight; and I answered that it did not make any difference to God what the material structure might be, He certainly could heal eyes, as well as anything else; and that with God nothing was impossible. I had been wearing glasses for twelve years. Immediately following this conversation my eyes began to bother me. I removed the glasses to rest the eyes, and in a few minutes they felt better. I then put the glasses on, and before long I was again suffering. I concluded that the glasses were wrong and that I would probably have to get new ones. Then it was as if a voice spoke to me and said that I did not need glasses any longer. I realized that I was healed. I removed the glasses, and have never worn them since. That was nine years ago. I am reading or writing almost continuously all day.
