County Borough Express

In your recent issue you report an address given in the Central Hall by a lady in which a reference to Christian Scientists appears which may possibly convey a wrong impression, and which I shall be glad if you will allow me to correct. In order to illustrate her point that it would be unreasonable for the opinions of majorities, as expressed in certain state laws, to be upset by the views of minorities, the speaker said, "One might just as well say because there were some Christian Scientists in the country there ought to be no public health service." It may be wrongly inferred from this that Christian Scientists differ from others in the respect due from all to certain legal enactments relating to public health. The attitude of Christian Scientists to the laws of the land in general is concisely stated by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 220 of her book, "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," where she says: "I believe in obeying the laws of the land. I practise and teach this obedience, since justice is the moral signification of law."
