It is nearly six years since I was introduced to this wonderful healing truth. I had for some years been connected with one of the recognized professions of this city. Perseverance and enthusiasm had been rewarded by progress, and my advice was often sought by others in the same kind of business. Then the many activities that had shown stability commanced to totter. Changes took place over which I seemed to have no control, until, as I reviewed the position through all my experience, it appeared hopeless to avoid a complete crash. I remember stopping in a quiet part of the road one day, after mentally going over the various complicated details, and wishing that God would become a partner, for I well knew that no mortal knowing the exact situation would enter into the task.

Wondering how long the end could be delayed, I surveyed myself and discovered that I was drinking alcohol to excess. I did not wish this to be pointed to as a cause of failure, so I made efforts to drop its use, excusing the first few unsuccessful attempts by declaring I had not tried sufficiently; but there soon arrived a time when I had to admit that my boasted will-power had failed. Then the outlook was black indeed.

A friend talked to me of Christian Science, and I agreed to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting before offering any criticism. Although I had been in this city all my life, I was unaware of the existence of the Christian Science movement with its Reading Rooms. I was much impressed with the testimony meeting, and came away with a copy, on loan, of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in my pocket. The next day I discovered that drink had become distasteful to me, and after one or two attempts to take it I had to admit that it was in some way the work of Christian Science; and then I commenced the study of the textbook to discover how this had happened.
