I came to Christian Science for healing

I came to Christian Science for healing. The condition to be healed was skin disease, with which I had been afflicted for about thirty years before taking up the study of Christian Science. I had taken all kinds of remedies, both external and internal, which were advertised for the cure of this disease. I also consulted three of the most eminent skin specialists in this city. They did all they could for me, but they could not cure me; so with faith and finances exhausted, I stopped taking medicine, and for a time did nothing at all.

About ten years previous to this time I had heard of Christian Science. There was then but one church, on the south side of Chicago, First Church of Christ, Scientist. I went there one Wednesday evening to a testimony meeting, and was very much impressed with the testimonies given; also with the peace and harmony which prevailed in the church. I went several times to the meetings, but could not seem to understand Christian Science, it was so different from the religion in which I had been brought up; and as I lived a good many miles from the church, and transportation was not very good, it was not easy for me to attend the services very often. I also heard so much adverse criticism of Christian Science from my family and my friends that I was almost afraid to say that I was interested in it. So I stopped going, but I never forgot it; the seed had been sown which was to bear fruit after many years.

Ten or twelve years later I heard there was a Christian Science church, namely, Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, in the district in which I was then living. Some of my neighbors were attending this church, and I witnessed the healing of one of their children of diphtheria. I took up the study of Christian Science in earnest, but was not healed as soon as I expected to be; in fact, ten years passed before I could say that I was healed. However, during this time many other healings took place in our family. Our youngest child, a girl of five years, was the first one to be healed. She was suddenly stricken with total paralysis. Great fear was manifested by the rest of the family, but I seemed to have no fear. I trusted absolutely in God, and knew that He could heal. A practitioner was called, and in one treatment the child was healed. A week later no one would ever have known that she had been ill. In the year and a half that followed, this child was healed of diphtheria, scarlet fever, inflammatory rheumatism, St. Vitus's dance, skin disease, and the itch. Before this she had never been sick a day in all her life. It seemed as though error was using her to discourage me, because I was the only one in the family who believed in Christian Science. However, after her healing, the rest of the family also believed.
