I had always been weak and sickly; was always taking...
I had always been weak and sickly; was always taking medicine for chronic bowel trouble and indigestion, and tonics to build me up. Our family physician said I had anæmia, and that my blood was turning to water; so he ordered me to eat nine raw eggs a day, and to take olive-oil massage to calm and feed my nerves; and I had insomnia too. None of these things helped me, and the doctor said he had tried everything known to the medical profession and did not know what else to do.
My mother had heard that an ocean voyage sometimes healed people, so I went to Europe with the bottom of my trunk filled with pint bottles of tonic; but I was so ill while there that I prayed to God to let me get back to America. When I returned, my sister persuaded me to go to a Christian Science practitioner as a last resort, which I did. He told me that God is Love, that He could not know anything but good for His children. He asked me if my mother would heal me if she could. And then he said, "How much more does your heavenly Father love you than any earthly mother could! In Him you live, move, and have your being." It all sounded so natural and true. I laid down all my fears, which had been such a weight all my life. I felt so happy, so free! I cannot tell how well I felt, and how thankful for the higher sense of God, good. I lost all thought of sickness, and was a new creature.
I want to tell of another healing. I was engaged to a young doctor, and after we were married he had a very bad automobile accident. His spinal column was injured and his neck fractured; and he became paralyzed. He said he could live only a short time. I, however, kept repeating the ninety-first psalm and thanking God that I knew that He did not do such evil things, and that "without him was not any thing made that was made." The spinal cord snapped back into place, the paralysis was relieved, and the activity of the functions returned. In two weeks my husband was able to work about the yard. Can we ever be grateful enough to dear Mrs. Eddy for battling alone that all may have the light?
