Surely I would be most ungrateful were I not to express...
Surely I would be most ungrateful were I not to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the many blessings which have come to me since taking up the study of Christian Science. My first healing was of the smoking habit. This came about entirely through reading our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Though I thought I enjoyed smoking, particularly after meals, I soon learned that "puffing the obnoxious fumes of tobacco, or chewing a leaf naturally attractive to no creature except a loathsome worm, is at least disgusting;" also, that "the use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science" (ibid., pp. 407, 454). I have also experienced, beyond question, that Christian Science heals physical discords. At the time of an epidemic I was healed of influenza. Though contending for nearly a week with all the symptoms, I was able to attend to my regular business duties until Sunday morning, when the error tried to keep me from attending church, where it was my privilege to serve as usher. However, the condition was spoken to as by "one having authority," and it immediately disappeared.
Several years later I was healed of a very unusual case of skin eruption. I was unable to wear my clothing for nearly two weeks. Though this condition was most aggravating, I was without fear. I constantly rejoiced in the understanding of an ever present God, and praised God through singing hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal and reading psalms from the Bible. For the loving help of those who encouraged me during this trial, I owe endless gratitude.
A recent demonstration over ptomaine poisoning was made with practically no loss of time from business. I also wish to express a deep sense of gratitude for the unfailing help Christian Science has been to me in solving the many and varied problems which have presented themselves in my business experience. I have been greatly sustained through pondering and studying the following (Science and Health, p. 128): "Business men and cultured scholars have found that Christian Science enhances their endurance and mental powers, enlarges their perception of character, gives them acuteness and comprehensiveness and an ability to exceed their ordinary capacity."
