In June, 1919, after I had spent thirteen years in semi-invalidism, suffering much of many physicians, Christian Science was presented to me. Since every material means had been exhausted, and as the only thing the medical profession had to offer was a tubercular sanitarium, with no hope of recovery, Christian Science was the only alternative. At this time a relative came to visit our home and told us of what he knew about Christian Science healing. He urged that we try it, as he knew nothing but good about it and had seen a friend healed of a cancer.
I turned to Christian Science not knowing anything about it, nor anyone personally interested, thinking it would not cost much, even if it did not do any good, as I had lost faith in every healing method. Every material supply had been swept away from us twice, our home being broken up once by crop failures and doctor bills, and next by fire and stock disease. We lived on a ranch, and everything that mortals hold dear was swept away. Although I prayed night and day as honestly and sincerely as I could, God never seemed to hear. There always seemed to be a veil, or something, which reversed the truth and shut me off from everything good.
The day that Christian Science was presented to me will always stand out as the greatest day of my life, for only since then have I begun really to live. At this time I had been in bed over eight months with tuberculosis of the spinal vertebrae, ankle, and mastoid bones. I had worn a plaster of Paris cast on the upper portion of my body continuously for six months; and my left foot turned in so badly I had to walk with crutches. The mastoid bone behind my ear had honeycombed, and a quantity of that bone had been removed, leaving a sore which surgeons said would never heal. Three other operations of a delicate nature had been performed with the hope that they might help to restore health.
