In the fall of 1921 one of our sons, a lad at school, developed goiter. Although fond of sports, he was not allowed to participate in them for the reason that the school doctor, who examined all students, stated that the boy's heart was "all shot to pieces," as he expressed it. When this was told to me, I tried to see the real man and to realize the truth that God's man is perfect.
Being a young student in Christian Science myself, I depended a good deal on the practitioner for myself and the children; but at this time the comfort and solace of having Christian Science treatment was denied me, as fear got in with another member of the family, who wanted medical advice. The boy's uncle, being a medical practitioner, gave the boy a thorough examination and verified what the school doctor had said. He also told us how dangerous a goiter might be with this child. To be polite, I listened as long as I could bear it; then I said, "We do not have to believe all that; he can be healed in Christian Science." I was then told that because the case was serious, the boy must be under the supervision of a reputable physician right along. As the boy's father wished medical treatment, I consented to it, but I believe the boy did not take any of the medicine prescribed. All the time I kept my own thought clear by doing my mental work, as taught in Christian Science, knowing that God is All-in-all and ever present Love.
This went on for three months or more, and I felt so sorry to see my boy in this condition; but never once did I waver in my confidence that God would heal him. Once I spoke to a kind Christian Science friend about the case, and he said, " 'Stand porter at the door of thought' [Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 392] and shut out all these unhealthy thoughts and fears, and you will win."
