[Written for the Sentinel]

My Daily Prayer

That I may glorify Thy name and Thee
By some slight gift of love or charity,
Whate'er my mortal sense of need may be—
This is my prayer.

That I may lift a brother fallen low,
May pass to other lips Love's drafts that flow
In rich abundance, wheresoe'er I go—
This, too, my prayer.

Should memories of angry word or tone
Mar my contentment when the day is done,
That I may recognize Love's voice alone,
Shall be my prayer.

Then, when the sunset's veil is drawn aside
And earth lies steeped in restful eventide,
To find my burdens loosened at Thy side
Is answered prayer.
